The story of the Awans is a good example of how an educated consumer of news media can stay on top of what is happening without relying on the major corporate outlets.

Why have I been saying all along that the Russians didn’t hack the DNC?

Because they didn’t. There were myriad leaks of data, however. Debbie Wasserman Schultz was the victim of the major email leak revealed by WikiLeaks. Some say the late Seth Rich was responsible for many of the leaks. Others say lawyer Justin Cooper is the main culprit. What we do know is that a lot of information was taken, and much of it is in the hands of foreign governments.

Foreign states know more about the inner working of our government then we do.

How does this happen? Old-fashioned state craft? Not so much anymore.

And that brings us to the story of the Awan Brothers and their family.

The Awan Timeline

  • Upon the swearing in of new congresspeople in 2004, Imran Awan joined the ranks of the US government.
  • In May of 2005, Abid Awan becomes the next brother to take on duties in the US House of Representatives.
  • February 1, 2007, Hina Alvi, Imran’s wife now adds to the family career path, taking a position in the US House chambers.
  • In 2011, Natalia Sova, Abid’s wife joined the ranks.
  • In May of 2014, Jamal Awan will become the last of the brothers to find gainful employment among the halls of the US House of Representatives.

The Awans have been employed as “Shared Employees” in the IT sector of the US House. That means they have had access to dozens of House members’ emails going back as far as 2004.

The Awans Get Rich

On March 1 of this year, The Daily Caller’s Luke Rosiak published his findings from data on the and websites. What he found was since 2003, the Awans have been paid nearly $5 million by Democrat member of the US House of Representatives for their services.

The salaries, according to InsideGov, range from 2.4x to 4.7x the median salary for comparable job titles in the US House. How this attracted no attention before this year is baffling, if not downright unbelievable.

Here’s Where it Gets Interesting

POLITICO – 02/02/17

House staffers under criminal investigation for alleged equipment theft, reports POLITICO’s Heather Caygle.

Five House employees are under criminal investigation amid allegations that they stole equipment from more than 20 member offices and accessed House IT systems without lawmakers’ knowledge.

Access to the House network was terminated for the five employees — four men and a woman — on Thursday afternoon, but it’s up to individual lawmakers to fire the staffers in question, according to a senior House official. The official said most members are proceeding with termination.

At this point, it’s a new story. Some Democrats were “hacked.” Well…. some 20 Democrats had members of the House IT staff illegally access their emails and steal their harddrives.

As Luke Rosiak points out, most of these Democratic House members are members are highly sensitive Intelligence committees, such as the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

As examples, here are two members and their committee pages:

Joaquin Castro (TX-20) – Committees and Caucuses

Jackie Speier (CA-14) – Committees

Interestingly, the members of The Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence asked for $125,000 in funding to get Top Secret clearance for staff members. The Awans spent much of their time on the payrolls of many of the signatories.

Smart readers know where this is going. A few days later, we learn the identities of the staffers. Heather Caygle with POLITICO chimes in again.

House staffers under criminal investigation still employed

Multiple Democratic lawmakers have yet to cut ties with House staffers under criminal investigation for wide-ranging equipment and data theft.

Imran Awan, a longtime House staffer who worked for more than two dozen Democrats since 2004, is still employed by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, though his access to the House IT network has been blocked since last week.

“At this time we are continuing to gather information from House officials and will determine the best approach to move forward once we have reviewed that information,” David Damron, communications director for Wasserman Schultz, said in an email when asked by POLITICO if Awan was still working for the Florida Democrat.

Wasserman Schultz declined to comment, referring POLITICO to the statement when asked follow-up questions Monday night.

Multiple relatives of Imran Awan, including his wife Hina Alvi, Abid Awan and Jamal Awan — all House staffers until recently — are also being investigated in connection to the alleged procurement scam, according to a senior House official close to the investigation. – Heather Caygle, POLITICO, 02/16/2017

So now we know, it’s those Awans.

Interestingly enough, there is a Delaware connection here as well. On January 1 of this year, Hina Alvi was paid $111 by the office of then-Rep. John Carney. On January 3, as Rep. Lisa Blunt-Rochester took over the office, Abid Awan was assigned to her office where he was listed as a shared employee until his dismissal on February 6. At the time of this writing, I have no idea whether Rep. Blunt-Rochester’s emails were improperly accessed nor if her hard drive or other equipment were stolen.

But wait, there’s more…

The Awans connections go even deeper into international affairs.

Amjad Awan goes back to the BCCI days. BCCI was the world’s seventh largest bank before being shut down in 1991 over money laundering allegations and ties to known terrorists groups around the world. A good article about the downfall is found here.

The Awans also run a car dealership in Northern Virginia called “Cars International A” and referred to as CIA in court documents. According to The Daily Caller, the dealership has engaged in loans with a now un-licensed Iraqi doctor accused of defrauding the government and a lawsuit with a former McDonald’s employee that led to Rao Abbas becoming employed by the US House as well.

The wife of the Awans father, Muhammad Shah, Samina Gilani alleges her stepsons of wiretapping her phones, imprisoning her in her home, threatening to kidnap family members in Pakistan, and preventing her from seeing her dying husband in a Virginia hospital unless she granted them power of attorney.

In this video, tracked down by The Daily Caller, we see Muhammad Shah signing the document to change the primary beneficiary of his life insurance policy from his wife, to his son, Abid Awan.

SORRY in advance, but formatting issues leave a LOT of space after the video.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, one-time head of the DNC, had given Imran Awan her iPad and passwords, according to leaked emails. TDC cites from WikiLeaks:

Garret Bonosky, deputy director of the DNC, wrote in a May 4, 2016 email: “Amy — I will call you shortly. I have to get this ipad thing figured out. Need to make sure I have her username and password.”

DNC Assistant to the Chair Amy Kroll responded: “I do not have access to her ipad password, but Imran does.”

Bonosky replied: “Just gave AK the cell phone for Imran.”

Kroll responded: “Just spoke to Imran, call me whenever GB and I’ll update you.”

So the access goes very deep. But surely, upon learning that her trusted IT guy was stealing information, including possibly top secret info, Debbie Wasserman Schultz would speak out on the issue and demand investigations.

Well, in fact on May 18 of this year she threatens the Chief of the Capitol Police with “consequences” over the seizure of equipment from her staffers’ offices for the criminal investigation. Video (again with too much following space):

On the 21st of May, The Daily Caller cited 5 Congressional staffers’ claims that members of Congress were displaying an “inexplicable and intense loyalty” towards the Awans.

“I don’t know what they have, but they have something on someone. It’s been months at this point” with no arrests, said Pat Sowers, who has managed IT for several House offices for 12 years. “Something is rotten in Denmark.”

The article goes on to say that data was being sent to an offsite server.

A House IT employee who requested anonymity said tech workers who have taken over some of those offices found that computers in some — but not all — offices were “thin clients” that sent all data to an offsite server in violation of House policies. Additionally, staffers’ iPhones were all linked to a single non-government iTunes account. – TDC, 05/21/17

Rep. Gregory Meeks of NY went so far as to suggest Islamophobia as a reason for the accusations against the Mina Alvi.

“I have seen no evidence that they were doing anything that was nefarious,” he told Politico. “I wanted to be sure individuals are not being singled out because of their nationalities or their religion.” – Fox News, 03/14/17

Things got so heated, that Tim Canova called her out and demanded that she recuse herself from all matters concerning Capitol Police budgeting.

Where are They Now?

It is unclear where all the Awans are at this moment. Currently Abid is engaged in a lawsuit with his step-mother over the life insurance policy. Americo Financial Life v. Abid Amin and Samina Gilani (2017).

According to school sources and Mrs. Gilani, Imran Awan and his wife, Hina have taken the kids out of school, put up the US properties for sale and returned to Pakistan, where they enjoy “VIP status.”

Imran and Hina recently withdrew their children from their schools, according to members of the Holly Elementary and Lorton Station Middle school communities. Multiple people said Hina told them she was headed to Pakistan where the family has significant property.

The Story So Far (well… mostly)

What we know for sure is that 5 Pakistani nationals had access to emails and computer hardware for at least 31 Democratic Congresspeople and potentially compromised some very sensitive information. This data was sent to an offsite server that has yet to be located.

None of the Awans were arrested, despite having potentially violated the Espionage Act, a crime which carries the death penalty. Some, if not all have left the country. And yet the corporate media has done little to touch the story.

To her credit, Maria Bartiromo did a piece on air (VIDEO) in February.

A search of CNN shows only one article pertaining to the Awans. That is an opinion piece written by Imran Awan called, “‘The Muslims Are Coming!’ Why Islamophobia is So Dangerous.”

As the investigations continue into Donald Trump, Jr. and his meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya and others, and more information about FusionGPS and Crowdstrike are released, the DNC and DCCC email leaks are being brought to light. as this happens, more and more we are going to learn about the Awans and their deep connections.

As it unfolds, the story will seem new to many, but the reporting has been there all along. The more aware we are as a news-consuming public, the more in tune we can be to happenings being missed or ignored by the large outlets.

I did mention that the Awans are from Pakistan and reportedly have much influence there. In addition, Hina Alvi is from Pakistan. Only one member of the family is not from Pakistani, Natalia Sova.

She is from Ukraine.

So What Next?

It must be determined what information was taken and from whom.

And who, if anyone will arrest and prosecute.
